“All who have Bitachon in Hashem merit to be similar to Him as the Pasuk states, ‘Blessed is the man who placed his trust in Hashem…”
(Medrash Rabbah, Devarim)
The care that must be taken in attempting to understand this astounding Chazal cannot be overstated. However, perhaps we can suggest somewhat of an explanation.
Chazal tell us that we all have a “Chelek Eloka Mimael – A spark of G-d within us.” However, we have been placed in a mundane body with desires that run contrary to G-dliness. The highest level of Bitachon is when we reach the understanding that Hashem, who created the entire universe as a means to bestow upon us the greatest pleasures and happiness, has the will to provide us with the greatest good that can befall us. The Mishna (Avos 2:4) states, “Fulfill Hashem’s will as if it is your own so that He will fulfill your will as if it was His own.” By following this dictum we can negate the negative desires of our body, overcoming them with His will, His spark within us which desires to provide us with the greatest pleasure. This actualizes Chazal’s statement, “All who have Bitachon in Hashem become similar to Him.”
Is there a greater and more fulfilling goal to be found in the entire Universe?
